Choose Auto Insurance Policy Wisely

Do your homework well before shopping for cheap auto insurance quotes. It is in your best interest to shop around and select your insurer carefully. Your insurer should offer both fair prices and excellent service. Following tips should help you find the right and cheap auto insurance for you:

  1. Know your state's auto insurance requirements: Most states require you to carry a minimum amount of liability coverage - coverage that pays for damages if you are at fault in an accident. Many states have "no-fault" auto insurance systems. Coverage for medical costs for you and your passengers is optional in some states. Coverage for damage to your car is optional. Ask the providers who give you the auto insurance quotes about your state's requirements, if you are unclear.
  2. Write up your personal auto insurance profile: List pertinent information concerning what type of vehicle you drive, where you drive, who else drives, what your driving record is, where you live, and what optional safety features your car has. This profile will make the next step easier.
  3. Read and understand your policy: Yes, read the fine print! Ask questions. Keep your policy at hand. Call your insurer to keep your policy up-to-date, inform your agent of any changes (new car, new job, new driver, etc.), and ask periodically about any possible discounts. Review your policy yearly with your insurer. It's also good to periodically search for cheap auto insurance quotes online. For the most part it's fast and free.
  4. Choose your policy period properly: Your insurance coverage is only in effect during the period specified in your policy. This period of time is determined when you enter into the contract with the insurer. Typically, auto policies are in effect for six months or one year terms. You may also be able to purchase auto insurance for longer or shorter periods of time.
Generally speaking, your premiums should be slightly lower when you purchase a policy with a longer period. With longer policies, the insurer can spread out the administrative costs of writing the policy over a longer period of time.
  5. Canceling your policy: You can cancel your insurance policy at any time before its expiration date. However, be aware that most insurers have specific procedures that you must follow in order to do so. When you cancel before the end of the policy there may be a penalty, but not all auto insurers penalize you for early cancellation. Check with your insurer for more information.
  6. Paying your premium: Pay the entire annual or semi-annual premium up front. Most insurance companies charge additional premium if you pay in monthly installments
